When it comes to the dunes at Glamis, there is a clear distinction between casual riders and those who actively attack the landscape. According to a report by Dirt Wheels, Duncan Racing recently took a 2024 Yamaha Raptor 700R Special Edition and transformed it into a purpose-built sand machine designed for high-speed carving and aggressive transitions.
Suspension and Handling Upgrades
Leonard Duncan, shop manager at Duncan Racing, emphasized that while the factory Raptor 700R is a capable platform, the goal of this build was to elevate the suspension for a more precise ride. The team utilized Roll Design long-travel A-arms paired with Elka Stage 5 shocks. This combination is designed to keep the machine composed through choppy rollers and deep G-outs, providing a ride quality that reportedly feels like landing on memory foam.
To ensure the rider maintains control, the build includes a GPR Low Boy steering stabilizer and Flexx handlebars. These components are specifically chosen to dampen vibrations and reduce wrist strain. For riders concerned with joint comfort, Duncan noted that the Flexx handlebars can be tuned with softer cushions to absorb harsh impacts.

The "Big Three" Power Package
Duncan Racing opted to keep the engine internals stock, focusing instead on what they call the "big three" performance upgrades. This setup includes a Vortex X10 ECU, a Fuel Customs intake, and the Duncan Fat Boy 4 exhaust system. Leonard Duncan explained that this combination is highly effective because it is easy to tune without the need for a dyno. The intake system was specifically highlighted for its ability to provide high airflow while maintaining protection against sand ingestion.

Traction and Finishing Touches
To put the power to the ground, the machine is equipped with ITP Sand Star paddle tires mounted on DWT ROK beadlock wheels. An RPM Dominator axle was installed to widen the rear stance, providing increased stability at high speeds. Additional practical upgrades include Baja Designs Squadron Sport LED lights for night riding, which run off the stock stator, and Wicked Metal Designs footpegs for improved grip.
The build is rounded out with functional details like a Works Connection hour meter, which Duncan uses to track maintenance intervals for oil changes and suspension service. By balancing power, suspension, and ergonomics, Duncan Racing has created a Raptor that offers a refined experience for those who spend their time in the dunes.
