Honda has introduced the Base Station Prototype, a new towable travel trailer designed at the company's U.S. research and development (R&D) centers in Los Angeles and Ohio. According to Honda, the Base Station Prototype emphasizes modularity, integrated smart technology, and clever packaging to offer segment-first innovations. The announcement was made in January 2026.

Jane Nakagawa, vice president of the American Honda R&D Business Unit, stated that the Base Station Prototype exemplifies the company's commitment to pursuing new ideas and creating value for customers. She likened it to the Motocompacto in terms of fresh and innovative thinking, with a design aimed at making camping more accessible and enjoyable for families.

Key Features and Design:

  • Towable by Various Vehicles: Designed to be towed by vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Honda Prologue EV, and upcoming Honda 0-Series SUV.
  • Design Philosophy: Adheres to Honda’s “Man Maximum/Machine Minimum” design philosophy, maximizing interior space while minimizing the footprint.
  • Compact Size: Designed to fit in a standard residential garage or parking space.
  • Spacious Interior: Features an open, spacious, airy, and bright interior.
  • Natural Light: Equipped with five large side windows that can be removed and replaced with accessories.
  • Stand-Up Space: Top can be raised to create seven feet of stand-up space.
  • Rear Tailgate: Top-hinged rear tailgate for easy access to the campsite.
  • Sleeping Capacity: Sleeps a family of four with a futon-style couch that folds out to a queen-sized sleeping area and an optional kids’ bunk bed.
  • Smart Technology: Features ambient light rings around the windows, programmable for brightness and color, that also illuminate the campsite.

Modularity and Accessories:

The Base Station Prototype showcases a modular design, with available accessories including:

  • Air conditioner
  • External shower
  • External kitchen with running water and induction cooktop

Power and Sustainability:

  • Zero Emissions Power: Enabled by a standard lithium battery, inverter, and integrated solar panels.
  • External Power: Compatible with campsite hookups or Honda generators for extended stays.

According to Honda, the Base Station Prototype builds on the company’s 50-year legacy of U.S. R&D. The company says it is designed to enhance the outdoor experience for both seasoned adventurers and first-time campers, complementing Honda’s existing lineup of rugged products like light trucks, ATVs, side-by-sides, generators, and motorcycles.
