A common problem for UTV owners customizing their rides involves applying vinyl wraps to interior surfaces. One Dirt Wheels reader, Earl Conrad, Jr. from Flagstaff, AZ, ran into difficulties while attempting to apply carbon fiber vinyl wrap to the Gatorstep roof liner of his 2025 Polaris RZR Pro R. According to the original article published on February 4, 2026, Conrad sought advice after the vinyl wrap failed to adhere properly and a subsequent attempt using 3M spray adhesive resulted in melting the foam liner.
Conrad initially disliked the red glow from the underside of his RZR's red aluminum roof. He opted for a black custom Gatorstep roof liner kit from Polaris but wasn't satisfied with the matte black finish. This led him to try applying a carbon fiber vinyl wrap, which proved problematic.
The Dirt Wheels expert offered the following advice:
- The glue on vinyl wrap is heat-activated. Overheating can damage the underlying material, as likely happened with the Gatorstep liner.
- The 3M spray adhesive chemically melted the Gatorstep material.
- If the Gatorstep surface is no longer smooth, imperfections will show through the vinyl wrap.
The Recommended Solution:
To properly attach vinyl wrap to a UTV headliner, whether reapplying to an existing liner or starting with a new one, Dirt Wheels recommends using Weldwood Gel Formula Contact Cement. The application process involves:
- Applying the cement to both surfaces.
- Allowing it to dry until tacky.
- Bonding the surfaces together, noting that the bond is instant and requires careful alignment.
Dirt Wheels specifically advises against using water-based contact cement, as it's considered less effective than the gel formula.
